The Lion King Celebration

Postings about the Last Parade

I've saved these recent postings to the USENET news group alt.disney.disneyland regarding the Lion King Celebration Parade (many are regarding the final performance on June 1, 1997).

From: phoenixa@gte.net (Tony ) Subject: Final Lion King Parade Date: 2 Jun 1997 01:25:53 GMT Message-ID: <5mt7f1$7rq$1@news7.gte.net> Just a quick note about the final Lion King Celebration. A large group of us (about 30) met up and watched the final parade as it stepped off from Main Street. We saw a wonderful performance, and it was very apparent that the performers gave it their all. We followed the parade as it moved to Small World plaza, singing and clapping as we moved along. Move than a few CMs had tears in their eyes, not not a few guests did too. It was a sad time to see the show come to an end, but it was special to be a part of the closing. Bravo to all of the performers, and we look forward to seeing the same quality of performance with the new Hercules parade. The Lion King Celebration will perform at the new (still under construction) Animal Kingdom theme park at WDW, set to open next spring 1998. The only TLK-related show now going on at WDW is a puppet show at MK's Fantasyland. --Carol Koster ()~() FidoNet Disney Echo Moderator FDC Walk-Around Minnie Mouse (_) Minnie on EntertainMuck TDC YOO HOO Minnie Mouse, Princess & Purveyor of Pretty Perky Polka Dots Disney Theme Park "Guest of Honor": DL 1958, WDW 1981, Mickey Mania Parade Grand Marshal September 1996, TDL & DLP Guest of Honor Wanna-Be

It was also a pleasure to meet all of the a.d.d.'ers who gathered and watched the parade at Main Street both times, and then we followed the floats up Main Street for the last performances. We even picked up a few feathers from the performers who dropped them. The dancers really poured their hearts out, showing extreme feeling for the delighted crowds. A fun day was had by all!! Before I got my AP, I didn't really watch the parades and stage shows, (they're for kids, right?). But just walking near the LKC drew me in. After watching some of it from afar, I made a point to actually wait for it and have a good place to watch from. I just love the costumes, the variety, and the energy of the performers (not to mention the music is *great*) So now, when I talk about the Main Street Electrical Parade, I have to say "It was my all time favorite *nighttime* parade," 'cause there is just no way for me to decide between the two which I like better. Thanks for doing such a great job. I hope the replacement will be as fun. Hiring the same cast back would be a great start! :) Stephanie

I second, third, fourth and fifth all the praise and farewells being offered as Disneyland closed out the Lion King Celebration parade this past Sunday and prepares to ship its elements to Florida to perform it at Animal Kingdom when it opens. This parade is among the best examples of contemporary Disney entertainment. The imagination in the floats, choreography and style of presentation, the costuming.... it all really came together for a really wonderful show. We saw it February 1995 during the Special Edition Disneyana Convention and LKC was definitely one of the high points of the trip. I hope we can see it again at WDW. I want to offer those performers and parade stagers and crew who put the parade on in hot weather or otherwise adverse weather conditions some special thanks. This had to be _tough_ to get through and still show a lot of energy and spirit and still make it through to the end of the parade route. It's very difficult, in the excitement of wanting to see the LKC, to realize that the safety and health of the performers are of prime consideration, and that rolling the show out on a given day (hot or other bad weather) just is not in their best interests. Amazingly, one of the days in February 1995 when we saw LKC it turned out to be 90-degrees in the afternoon and the parade went out. It was appreciated, but the performers that day certainly worked hard and definitely earned the applause they got in the unexpected heat. Thank you, DL and all those connected to the LKC in California.... Now, see y'all soon in Florida! --Carol

I have to say, I have never witnessed a more Breathtaking parade EVER in my life. The energy of all the Cast, even in the heats rising into the Century mark, You gave it your All. You gave my Brother a peace, He very warmly took with him as he left this earth on Sunday morning, After a 2 year battle with cancer. It was painfull to see the decline of what was once a Strong, and Envinceable young man.It was painfull and a struggle for those that loved him most, Knowing that instead of visiting the Park,he was receiving his therapy. But YOU, in the L.K.C. were what we made very special trips for. He was calm, and not showing any pain when we would be there to see it again for the Hundredth time. Unfortunately, at your final Performance, I attended it for him, Because he was too Ill to go, but demanded I was there to see an end of something TRULLY, Great. The recording of the last performance as it went into Small World Plaza for the final time, played as my Brother died. He wanted to see it again. He left us Peacefully, and I must Thank, Each and Everyone of You for his Peace. I know, I cant ever have my Brother back, and that All things Must come to an end. But, Because we have the Memory of those Precious things, They will live on FOREVER...Thank You for them All. Bruce Mittereand Palos Verdes,Ca

Do other > people have favorite parts of the parade now gone? When my family came out to Disneyland for a four day weekend in August of 96 *exclusively* for the reason of the final seasons of MSEP, LKC, and Pocahontas, we had a wonderful time of seeing all of these many times. We planned to watch each one at least twice, but somehow, we ended up seeing the LKC five different times over the course of our trip. The thing that really stood out for me was the lead unit and I will attempt to write a mini-trip report to explain why... We had already gone on a major vacation earlier that summer (to the Grand Canyon/South Utah/Las Vegas area) and so to be sitting on Main Street USA two months later was AMAZING. When I found out that it would be the final season of the MSEP, I knew that I HAD to get to Disneyland to see it. My previous trip history had been: DL 88, WDW 83, 86, 89, 90, 92, 95. However, the trips had always been in off-season times when the MSEP was not running, or conversely, after WDW had switched to SpectroMagic. So I knew that as a Disney fan, I had to see the MSEP before I would never have the chance again. (I never figured I would see it two years later in Paris, or again in WDW in the future.) When I heard about it also being the final season for LKC and probably Pocahontas as well, I went in to campaign mode against my parents. I can still remember the night I got this crazy idea in my head and sat up making a list of all the reasons we had to go. I presented my parents with lists of new things since our 88 trip (that was a long one:) as well as things unique from WDW and things closing or ending soon. After much begging and prodding, they discovered some unused frequent flier miles and hotel points, so that it was nearly a free trip; only meals and park tickets were costs. We surprised my two younger sisters and didn't tell them we were doing anything. We just said "pack clothes for four days" and took them to the airport. It took them until half-way into the flight (by looking at the map) to figure out where John Wayne airport was and what we were doing. The reaction surely amused a few people on the plane. That morning, we were at home and within seven hours, we were sitting on a curb on Main Street waiting for the Lion King Celebration. We were in Town Square, on the inside of the square, right across from the Emporium. At that spot, you just can't see around the buildings and down Main Street. So as the parade made its way towards us, we saw nothing and then the two rhinos and lead percussionists came around the corner. I was in heaven!! I couldn't believe I had actually pulled this off and was in Disneyland!! The parade stopped for The Circle of Life and the rhinos/percussionists were right in front of us for quite a while. Their heart and amazing performance (in horrible heat, no less) reminded me right there why I went to all the trouble to get there. Somehow, we ended up seeing the parade four more times over the next days, and every time, I saw the same performers in the lead unit. I thought it was so cool to actually be recognizing the people and I officially had a new favorite parade. Everything else about the trip was great (first time seeing Fantasmic, Toontown, FoF, Space Mt w/ music, Pocahontas, Indy) (farewell to Captain EO, Circlevision, Rocket Jets), but the images of that first sight of the Lion King Celebration have stuck with me for all this time. Well, that was probably too long of an answer of that, but I wanted to explain why I have such a strong emotional attachment to that parade. Now that I go to school out here, I have gotten to go the park almost monthly, but I still never forget what a special and unique thing that visit was. --Christopher

One of the last two trips he was able to take outside his house was to see the Parade. "Circle of Life' was sung at his funeral. So if you see someone quietly blubering at the back of the house during this section of the current show, it's probably me. Lynn Gustafson
